SUMMARY

Wiggin and Dana is a growing, full-service law firm with over 150 attorneys located in Connecticut, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Palm Beach.  The firm represents clients throughout the United States and globally on a wide range of sophisticated and complex matters.

The Knowledge and Research Services (KRS) Department provides a wide range of sophisticated information services to attorneys and clients.  We are looking for a dynamic individual to develop the newly created Manager, Research Services position,.  The Manager will work closely with the Chief Knowledge Services Officer, KRS staff, attorneys and other members of the firm to oversee the research function and to evolve client-facing products and services. 

The Manager oversees the research analyst team, setting standards, managing the intake process, overseeing complex research assignments, providing quality assurance, and performing in-depth and specialized research.   The Manager drives outreach efforts, including orientation and training, and serves as a liaison to selected practice areas and administrative departments.  The Manager is also deeply involved in collection development activities, including resource evaluation and implementation. 

The Manager reports to the Chief Knowledge Services Officer and supervises two Research Analysts.

KEY AREAS of RESPONSIBILITY

Oversee the research function by:    

  • Establishing performance goals, conducting performance reviews, and mentoring and developing the staff,
  • Overseeing the request intake process, supervising complex research assignments, and providing quality assurance; and
  • Performing complex research to support client engagements and business development.

Provide outreach services, including:  

  • Serving as liaison to designated practice areas, committees and/or administrative departments;
  • Developing and providing marketing tools and communication channels to ensure the flow of information to and from other parts of the firm; and
  • Developing and providing orientation and training programs to educate users about services and to ensure efficient and cost-effective use of the resources.

Perform other duties, including:   

  • Identifying useful resources, leading or participating in product evaluations, and overseeing the introduction and implementation of new resources and tools;
  • Staying current with developments in information resources and technologies and how they are applied in a law firm setting; and
  • Overseeing the copyright compliance function.

LOCATION.  Any CT office (New Haven strongly preferred) or New York.  Hybrid home/onsite arrangements will be considered.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS  

 Education and Work Experience

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited program required; J.D. preferred but not required.
  • Ten plus years of progressively responsible experience providing research services in a law library, with law firm experience strongly
  • Five plus years of management experience, including project management and implementation and supervision of professional staff.     

Knowledge and Expertise

  • Broad knowledge of, and proficiency with the legal, business, and general resources and research methodologies used in law firms.    
  • Strong knowledge of library technologies, including software and products used for communication, research, and knowledge sharing.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize large amounts of data and information, presenting the findings in an appropriate manner.

Other Requirements

  •  Service-oriented individual with enthusiasm for the challenges of providing research services in a law firm setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues and a diverse clientele, either as the leader or as part of the team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver group presentations.
